How to Choose Between PP, ABS, HDPE & Nylon for Your Plastic Part

A buyer's guide to the four most-used plastics in Pakistani injection moulding — what each is good for, what each costs, and how to pick the right one for your product.

Why material choice matters more than you think

The material you pick determines how your part feels, how long it lasts, how much it costs, and how easy it is to mould. Get it right and your product wins on quality and price. Get it wrong and you're either over-engineering (paying for material you don't need) or under-engineering (failures in the field).

This guide covers the four plastics that account for over 80% of injection-moulded products in Pakistan: PP, ABS, HDPE and Nylon (PA). For each, we cover what it's good for, what it costs roughly, and the signs your part should be made of it.

Polypropylene (PP) — the workhorse

What it is. A lightweight, semi-rigid commodity plastic. The single most-used material in plastic moulding worldwide.

Strengths. Inexpensive. Food-safe (FDA-grade PP exists). Good chemical resistance — handles soaps, weak acids, oils. Flexes without breaking — great for living hinges. Lightweight.

Weaknesses. Not the strongest under impact. Not great in UV (yellows over years outdoors). Limited heat resistance.

Best for. Caps, lids, closures, jugs, cups, kitchen containers, thermos bodies, light housings, packaging, household products. If your part doesn't need premium strength, premium gloss or extreme temperatures, PP is almost always the right answer.

Pakistani cost (raw). Cheapest of the four — about PKR 280–380 per kg depending on grade.

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) — the cosmetic workhorse

What it is. A tougher, more rigid engineering plastic with a glossier finish than PP.

Strengths. High impact resistance. Excellent surface finish — looks glossy and premium straight from the mould. Holds tight tolerances. Takes paint and printing well. Available in flame-class grades for electrical work.

Weaknesses. More expensive than PP. Not food-safe (most grades). Yellows in long UV exposure.

Best for. Automotive interior trim, electrical switch housings, instrument enclosures, motorcycle body parts, appliance covers, anything where the finish has to look premium and where the part has to take knocks.

Pakistani cost (raw). Mid-range — about PKR 380–520 per kg.

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) — the tough plastic

What it is. A heavier, tougher cousin of PP. Resistant to almost everything.

Strengths. Excellent chemical resistance — handles strong acids, bases, fuels. Food-safe. UV-stable (with stabilisers added). Very strong against impact. Cheap.

Weaknesses. Less rigid than PP — flexes more. Lower-quality surface finish. Cannot be printed/painted easily.

Best for. Storage tanks, large containers, water-cooler bodies, crates, agricultural products, fuel containers, anything that has to survive outdoors or handle chemicals.

Pakistani cost (raw). Similar to PP — about PKR 290–390 per kg.

Nylon / Polyamide (PA) — the strong precision plastic

What it is. An engineering plastic — strong, rigid, takes high loads.

Strengths. Strongest of the four. Takes high temperatures. Holds tight tolerances — ideal for snap-fit and threaded parts. Wear-resistant — great for gears and bushings. Glass-filled versions are even stronger.

Weaknesses. Expensive. Absorbs moisture (changes dimensions in humid Pakistan unless treated). Harder to mould (sticks to cavity, needs hotter processing).

Best for. Automotive clips and connectors (snap fits), motorcycle structural parts, mechanical gears, bearings, parts that bear real load.

Pakistani cost (raw). Highest of the four — about PKR 700–1,100 per kg depending on grade.

Quick decision matrix

Need it cheap, lightweight, food-safe, not under heavy load?PP

Need it glossy, premium-looking, impact-resistant, electrical-safe?ABS

When in doubt, tell your moulder what the part does and what it needs to survive. A good Pakistani moulder will recommend the cheapest material that does the job — not the most expensive.

Bottom line

Material choice can move your per-part cost by 2–3× and make the difference between a part that lasts 10 years and one that fails in 10 months. Get this decision right early with help from your moulder. Most parts in Pakistan are PP or ABS — those two cover 80% of injection-moulded products. HDPE and Nylon cover the specialised cases.
