How to Get Your First Plastic Prototype Made in Pakistan

A step-by-step guide for first-time product creators in Pakistan — from idea to a physical plastic prototype you can hold, test and show to buyers.

The short answer

You don't need a factory, a degree in engineering, or a huge budget to get a plastic prototype made in Pakistan. You need: (1) an idea (even a sketch on paper), (2) a conversation with a moulder or prototyping service who can advise on material and manufacturability, and (3) PKR 10,000–100,000 depending on complexity and method. The whole process — from first sketch to a physical part in your hand — takes 1–6 weeks.

This guide walks you through every step, with Pakistani-specific options, realistic costs, and the mistakes first-timers make so you can avoid them.

Step 1 — Define what you need (before you call anyone)

Before contacting any manufacturer, answer these five questions — even roughly:

What does the part do? What's its function — structural, cosmetic, container, mechanism, cover? This determines material choice.

How big is it? Rough dimensions in centimetres. Measure something similar if you're not sure.

What material should it be? Don't overthink this — your moulder will help. Just know if it needs to be rigid or flexible, transparent or opaque, food-safe or not, heat-resistant or not.

How many do you eventually need? 10? 1,000? 100,000? This determines whether you prototype with 3D printing (low volume) or go straight to a simple mould (if volume justifies it).

What do you have right now? A sketch? A CAD file? A photo of a similar product? An existing part you want to copy or improve? Whatever you have is enough to start a conversation.

Step 2 — Get a design file (or don't — and let someone help)

If you have a 3D CAD file (STEP, IGES, STL, Solidworks, Fusion 360): great — skip to Step 3.

If you have a 2D drawing with dimensions: a moulder or freelance CAD designer can convert it to 3D. Cost in Pakistan: PKR 5,000–30,000 depending on complexity. Freelancers on Fiverr and Upwork also do this; search 'product design CAD Pakistan.'

If you only have a sketch or an idea: photograph it, write down the dimensions you want, and send it to a moulder. Good Pakistani moulders — Rehman Industry included — will interpret your sketch and advise on how to make it mouldable. We do this routinely. Don't let the lack of a formal drawing stop you from starting.

If you have an existing part you want to replicate or modify: bring the physical part to the moulder. They can reverse-engineer it (measure it, create a mould from it) without a CAD file. This is common in Pakistan — many aftermarket parts start as copies of an original, improved and adapted.

Step 3 — Choose your prototyping method

Three options, depending on your budget and timeline:

Option A — 3D printing (fastest, cheapest for 1–20 parts). Send your file to a 3D printing service in Lahore, Karachi or Islamabad. FDM printing costs PKR 500–5,000 per part depending on size. SLA (resin) printing costs more but gives smoother finish. Turnaround: 1–3 days. The part won't be production-grade material but it will let you test fit, feel and function. Good for: showing to investors, testing ergonomics, checking assembly with other components.

Option B — CNC machining a prototype (mid-cost, real material). A machinist cuts your part from a solid block of the actual plastic (ABS, Nylon, Acetal). More expensive than 3D printing (PKR 10,000–50,000 per part) but the result is a functional prototype in the real material. Good for: mechanical testing, load-bearing parts, precision fits.

Option C — Soft tooling / simple mould (for 50–500 parts). If you already know you'll need hundreds of parts, skip straight to a simple single-cavity aluminium or low-grade steel mould. Costs PKR 50,000–150,000 but gives you real injection-moulded parts in the real material. Good for: market testing, initial sales, Amazon/Daraz listings. The soft tool won't last 100,000 parts — but it'll do 500–5,000 and tell you whether the product sells before you invest in a production tool.

Step 4 — Talk to a moulder (even before the prototype)

This is the step most first-timers skip — and it costs them money later. Before you 3D-print or CNC your prototype, show the design to an injection moulder and ask: 'Can this be moulded? What would you change?'

Why? Because a prototype designed without considering mouldability often can't be produced at scale without a redesign. Walls too thin, no draft angles, undercuts that need expensive side-actions — these are DFM issues that a moulder catches in 15 minutes. Fix them before the prototype and you avoid a second round of prototyping after the DFM review tells you the design needs changes.

Step 5 — Test the prototype

Once you have a physical prototype in hand, test it against your original requirements:

Fit: does it assemble with the other components? Do the snap fits work? Do the screw holes line up?

Function: does it do what it's supposed to? Does it hold the load? Does it seal? Does the mechanism work?

Feel: does it feel right in the hand? Is the weight acceptable? Is the surface finish what you expected?

Feedback: show it to 5–10 potential users or buyers. What do they say? What would they change? This is the cheapest user research you'll ever do.

If everything checks out, you're ready for production tooling. If something needs changing, iterate — modify the CAD file, reprint or re-machine, and test again. Each iteration costs a fraction of what a tooling change costs later.

Step 6 — Move to production tooling

When the prototype is approved, your moulder builds the production mould. This is the big investment — but by this point you've validated the design, the material and the market. The mould is built to last hundreds of thousands of cycles.

Timeline: 3–8 weeks for tooling + 1–2 weeks for T1/T2 sampling. Your moulder sends sample parts from the new mould for your final sign-off before volume production begins.

Cost: depends on complexity. Simple single-cavity: PKR 80,000–200,000. Multi-cavity: PKR 350,000–700,000+. Complex precision: PKR 800,000+. See our detailed cost breakdown article for more.

Where to find prototyping services in Pakistan

3D printing services: MakerLab (Lahore), multiple freelancers on OLX and Facebook Marketplace offering FDM/SLA printing. Search 'سری ڈی پرنٹنگ' on Facebook groups.

CNC machining: most tool rooms in Gujranwala, Karachi and Lahore offer CNC machining of plastic prototypes. Ask any injection moulder — they usually have a CNC setup in-house.

Injection moulding (soft + production tooling): Gujranwala is the capital for this. Rehman Industry is one option — established since 2006, in-house tool room, free DFM review.

Freelance CAD designers: Fiverr, Upwork, or local engineering graduates. For simple parts, a freelancer can produce a mouldable 3D file from your sketch for PKR 5,000–20,000.

Common first-timer mistakes

Designing without DFM. You spend PKR 50,000 on a beautiful 3D-printed prototype, then the moulder says 'this can't be moulded as-is.' Redesign → reprint → wasted time and money. Talk to a moulder first.

Choosing material last. Material affects wall thickness, shrinkage, strength, cost, and surface finish. Pick it early — or at least narrow to 2–3 candidates — so the design accounts for it.

Skipping the prototype entirely. Going straight to a production mould without prototyping is gambling PKR 200,000+ that your design is right. It almost never is on the first try. A PKR 5,000 3D print could save you a PKR 100,000 mould rework.

Over-engineering. Your first product doesn't need to be perfect. It needs to be good enough to sell, test and learn from. Simplify the design, reduce cavities, use standard materials. You can always upgrade the mould later.

Realistic costs and timeline summary

Sketch → 3D file: PKR 5,000–30,000 (freelance CAD) or free if you do it yourself.

3D-printed prototype: PKR 500–5,000 per part. 1–3 days.

CNC-machined prototype: PKR 10,000–50,000 per part. 3–7 days.

Soft mould (50–500 parts): PKR 50,000–150,000 tooling + low per-part. 3–4 weeks.

Production mould: PKR 80,000–700,000+ tooling. 3–8 weeks.

Total from sketch to first production parts: PKR 100,000–500,000 and 6–12 weeks. Less than most first-timers expect.

Bottom line

Getting a plastic prototype made in Pakistan is more accessible than it has ever been. 3D printing services are available in every major city. CNC shops will machine you a real-material prototype in days. And Pakistani injection moulders will DFM-review your design for free before you spend a rupee on tooling.
