Why Gujranwala?
Gujranwala — known locally as GRW — is the heart of Pakistan's plastic manufacturing. It's the country's third-largest industrial city (after Karachi and Faisalabad), with a metalworking and moulding tradition going back generations. If you're sourcing plastic parts in Pakistan, the odds are you'll end up working with a Gujranwala factory.
The city's strengths are simple: a deep pool of skilled labour, tooling workshops that double as mould makers, easy logistics access to Lahore (90 minutes south) and Islamabad (3 hours north), and unit costs that beat almost anywhere else in the country.
What gets made in Gujranwala
Pakistani plastic factories in Gujranwala produce most of the everyday moulded products you see in the country: caps, lids, jugs, cups, thermos bodies, water-cooler housings, motorcycle parts, automotive trim, electrical switch housings, instrument boxes, poultry mats, household containers and a long tail of contract work for brands across Pakistan.
Many Gujranwala factories — Rehman Industry included — work primarily on contract for other brands. The brand's name goes on the product; the moulding happens here.
What to look for in a Pakistani moulder
Years in business. Plastic moulding is a long-game craft. Anyone with 20+ years has seen most of what can go wrong and learned to avoid it. Be cautious of brand-new operations.
In-house tooling. A moulder who can build, repair and tweak their own moulds in-house gives you much shorter feedback loops than one who subcontracts. This becomes critical when you need a design change mid-production.
A real factory you can visit. Pakistani business runs on relationships. A moulder who welcomes you to walk through their factory is signalling confidence in their setup. Be wary of any who don't.
Honest lead times. Anyone promising 'two weeks' for a complex mould is either lying or sub-quality. Real lead times are 3–8 weeks for tooling depending on complexity.
Willing to give DFM advice. A good moulder will suggest tweaks to your part design that save tooling cost. Bad ones just take the order and ship whatever you specified — even if it's needlessly expensive.
What to budget for
Budget for tooling as a one-time capital cost. A simple single-cavity mould runs PKR 80,000–200,000. Medium multi-cavity tools run PKR 350,000–700,000. Complex precision tools can hit several million.
Then budget for per-part cost, which depends on material, weight and cavity count. Most small parts (caps, lids, small clips) land at PKR 3–15 each. Medium parts (jugs, bottles, housings) at PKR 20–80. Large housings or assemblies at PKR 100–400+.
Volume amortises tooling. A high-volume run of 100,000 parts has dramatically lower per-piece cost than a 1,000-piece sample run because the tooling cost spreads further.
Common buyer mistakes
Choosing on price alone. The cheapest quote usually means cheap tool steel, no DFM, and a mould that fails after 50,000 parts. Pay slightly more for quality and you'll save over the product's life.
Skipping the factory visit. Spending an afternoon walking the factory floor tells you more than any brochure. If you can't visit, ask for live video.
No NDAs. If your design is proprietary, sign an NDA up-front. Most Pakistani moulders will sign one — most contract work runs on confidentiality by default.
No sample approval before production. Always sign off on T1/T2 samples before greenlighting volume. Catching an issue at 10 parts is cheap; catching it at 10,000 is expensive.
How to start
Pick 2–3 Gujranwala moulders. Send each the same information — your part drawing or sample, target material, estimated quantity per run. Compare quotes side by side. If one is suspiciously cheap, ask why. The middle quote, from a moulder you trust on a factory visit, is usually the right pick.
